CHARLIEU - Centre historique

HISTORICAL CENTER OF CHARLIEU

From its rich history, the town has preserved stone houses (13th century), picturesque half-timbered and corbelled houses (14th - 15th century) or in the Renaissance and classical style. It is pleasant to stroll through its medieval streets.

The first mention of the town of Charlieu dates from 994. It was created under the protection of the Benedictine Abbey, on the edge of the Duchy of Burgundy. This strategic position led the kings of France to take the city under their protection, such as Philippe Auguste who, in 1180, had it fortified. A prosperous city, it is populated by merchants and craftsmen, often weavers. In 1827, the silk weaving industry was established in Charlieu.

Couvent des cordeliers

CONVENT OF THE CORDELIERS

Founded around 1280 by a community of Franciscan friars, the convent has had a turbulent history. Destroyed in 1360, it was rebuilt at the end of the 14th century, before being sold as national property. The cloister is urgently classified as a historical monument.

Occupied by Friars Minor Conventuals, it was closed in 1792. The only buildings remaining today are the cloister, the church and the "library" of the monks. The large cloister, in a radiant Gothic style, has very neat decoration. Its north gallery in particular is adorned with figurative capitals humorously representing vices and virtues. The adjoining church (late 14th century) is remarkable for its exposed oak framework, dating from the end of the 17th century, and its mural paintings from the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. The convent retains its main architectural elements that the visitor can discover freely with a document or on a guided tour.

Musée Hospitalier

HOSPITAL MUSEUM Museum housed in the former 18th century Hôtel-Dieu. Reconstruction of the apothecary, the operating and treatment rooms, the linen room and the large ward for the sick. View of the Sainte Marthe chapel. Olfactory atmosphere. Shop.

The Hôtel-Dieu de Charlieu closed its doors in 1981. It is within its walls, an 18th century building, that the hospital museum was created. Reconstructions of rooms dating from the end of the 19th century to the 1950s are to be discovered: the large sick room with its rows of beds, the treatment and operating rooms, the linen room. The apothecary, classified as a Historic Monument, retains its beautiful 18th century woodwork, its plant drawers and a very fine set of 18th century earthenware pots with blue decoration. The religious dimension of the hospitals of yesteryear is evoked in particular by the presence of the chapel, whose magnificent altar in gilded wood (classified M.H) is visible from the museum.

Musée de la Soierie

SILK MUSEUM For a century and a half, the town of Charlieu has been renowned for its exceptional silk fabrics intended for Haute Couture and high-end furnishings. In 1992, a Silk Museum was set up in the former Hôtel-Dieu de Charlieu, a beautiful 18th century building.

The visit begins with a set of textile machines in working order, most of which date from the 19th century. Luxurious old silk dresses as well as samples of creations designed for Haute Couture are also presented. Part of the museum is devoted to the last Corporation of Weavers in operation in France: that of Charlieu, which organizes a unique and spectacular festival every year with an auction of royal offices! To complete the visit, an audiovisual projection testifies to the textile memory still very much alive today.
